Literally translated, "Bonjour" can be understood as "good day." In practice, though, it serves as a greeting equivalent to "hello" or "good morning."
To convey politeness, it is advisable to include the person's title, if known:
- Bonjour madame => Hello madam/Hello Mrs....
- Bonjour docteur => Hello docteur/Good morning docteur
- Bonjour monsieur => Hello sir/Good morning sir
- Bonjour mademoiselle. Hello miss/good morning miss.
